Saving Places

The Church of the Holy Cross at Skatin/ Skookumchuck in British Columbia  has been referred to as "the cathedral in the wilderness".  Itwas built by indigenous people of their reserve, and blessed by the Archbishop in 1908.  It is a national historic site, recognized for the unique carpenter's gothic style and featuring 3 towers, stained glass windows, and original wookwork details..  In 2006, during restoration work, PTV Productions, a small film company created a documentary including both historic and modern photographs, interviews with Elders, the engineer, architect and project manager., and vivid scenes of local workers, many descended from the original builders. The document was broadcast a number of times on History TV.

Many of the Elders featured in the documentary have since passed away, but have left their knowledge and wisdom for current generations:  Shirley Wallace, Seraphine Sam, Watella Wallace Henry, Margaret Ann Peters, Laura Purcell.  Other family interviewed include Geneva Quipp, Lyle Peters,
